About the exhibition 'Every mix tape is a love letter' was an exhibition (with accompanying gig) put on by Love is my Velocity as part of the Artrage Festival in Perth, Western Australia on 1 November 2006. We figured that for both the people who make them and the people who receive them, mix tapes have always been more than merely the sum of their parts. Every scribbled song, every hand drawn cover, every rickety rerecorded cassette, points to hours of labour and dedication, excitement and inspiration, and above all, a means of communicating - via music. With 'Every mix tape is a love letter', we collected some of these stories from a wide cross section of people - musicians, artists, record store clerks and anyone else. And when the exhibition finished, we decided to put the images, tracklistings and stories online (click on the images!). Although unlike the exhibition, you can't listen to the tapes because we want to keep our meagre possessions from being yanked off us by the long arm of the law. About Love Is My Velocity! We are, for lack of a better word, a collective, who began by putting on club nights in Perth, Australia then expanded out into being a record label. We also find ourselves putting on occasional gigs and, well, now curating an exhibition as well. If you like us then you can send us an email, or even better, buy some of our releases.
