creamin' Jay Hawkins tape

Creator: Screamin' Jay Hawkins
Date: 24th April 1991

"Screach" as I call him, made this tape for me one lazy afternoon in his house in the San Fernando Valley, California. I stayed with him as his lover and potential fiance for a couple of months in March/April 1991 at the tender age of 19 (he was about 60 something).

In this tape he traverses some favourites from the post-war decades 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s with his inimitable and amorous narration - introducing the tracks and occasionally whooping and a-hollerin' over the top of some of the ditties with his trademark enthusiasm. He also includes a section of his own music, including some gems with disco-style backing.

I returned to my hometown of Perth the day after this tape was made, never to return to his dear arms. Screamin' Jay (Jalacy) Hawkins died in a hospital in France on 12th February, 2000. May he rest in peace...
