When asked to submit a mix tape for this project I found myself in an almost arcadian nostalgia. I recently spent some time with someone from my past who I have loved for some quarter of a century and who no longer lives in Perth. Her beauty and its power to disturb remain undiminished. Spending time made me recall the music we used to listen to when we first met and how obsessive we were about it. Some of it has found its way onto this tape. Back then there was less music and the world was better for it. The love was deep and unselfconscious, now there is madness.

It is true that every mix tape is a love letter and, for that matter, so is every song I've written. For a dedicated mix tape the artwork is as important as the music. In the 1980s I often made mix tapes to woo potential lovers, to give as birthday presents, and to bring to gig for the breaks between bands. Now I don't. Well not as much anyway. I'd rather write a song.

While I could have submitted a tape from the "good old days" I decided to make a greatest hits of sorts with many of the songs drawn from a variety of tapes made for a variety of people from a variety of times. Of course, being me, there is a romantic theme at work here and the tape is presented not just for this exhibition but for my crush who may or may not find it here, and may or may not guess I made it for her.
